History at the center – A journey through time

The town of Jülich has adopted the motto "Historic fortress town – modern research town." In keeping with this spirit, the Jülich Town Archives and the Citadel Museum have joined forces to take a look at their collections and put together an exhibition that takes the people of Jülich on a short journey through 2000 years of town history.

The exhibition focuses less on the major events and famous figures in Jülich’s history. Instead, it aims to trace the factors that have shaped everyday life in the town and the lives of ordinary Jülich residents. In doing so, it also looks at those who are often overlooked in historical accounts: women, marginalized groups, and migrants. The exhibition traces the history of Jülich from its founding as a Roman road station to the establishment of Forschungszentrum Jülich as Germany’s most important large-scale research facility.

A whole series of residents also have their say. Their life stories provide impressive testimony to life in Jülich through the centuries.

Come and visit us in the foyer of the Center for City History (in the Forum at Aachener Tor 16), where “History in the Center” will be on display from November 13, 2025.
